Durham City is situated 21 km (13 miles) south west of Sunderland. A River flows north through the city – the River Wear. The river meaners its way through the city which encloses the centre on three sides which forms Durham’s Peninsula.
With a population of 42,939 (estimated in 2001).
Little has changed over the past 200 years within the historical city centre of Durham. It is made up of the peninsula containing the Durham Castle, palace green, cathedral and former administrative buildings for the palatine.
The whole of the centre of Durham is designated a conservation area.
There are several famous names that lived in Durham City, these include Rowan Atkinson (known from Mr Bean and Black Adder TV shows). Comic Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy left his birthplace in Cumbria as a child and schooled in Bishop Aukland – Durham. Perhaps the most famous person that schooled in Durham was Prime Minister Tony Blair. He attended The Choristers School in Durham City.

There is the Beamish Museum and Locomotion, The National Railway Museum at Shildon and the Bowes Museum.
